When an investor gives money to a start-up company (or any company for that matter), how does it retain the original amount given? Does the company pay interest until the amount is covered, or does the investor get a stake in the company, or both? How much of a percentage would an investor who gives $10K to a start-up company hold in the company? Or can the company just choose to pay back the loan over a period of time? Basically, how do investors make their money off of companies?

Ok my uncle is a home builder in the metro Atlanta area, due to the credit and real estate market he is struggling to sell 4 new homes he built. My partner and I are starting a business and we're looking to raise $300,000 to get it started. I am in the process of starting a small business and would like to raise money from outside investors. The investors will most likely be friends and family. I would like to offer each an equity stake in the company. Here are my questions/issues: How do i compensate them? What percentage is common? How to determine percentage of ownership?
